Manchester United transfer news RECAP as Aaron Wan-Bissaka suffers injury blow, teammate tipped for January move

Manchester United will be without Aaron Wan-Bissaka for a number of weeks after the defender picked up an injury in the dying stages of Saturday’s defeat to Brighton.

The full-back joins a list of players currently sidelined with nine stars suffering setbacks. Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho and Antony are also unavailable, adding to the strain on the squad.

Erik ten Hag also has a Champions League opener to prepare for ahead of the trip to Bayern Munich. United will hope to put Saturday’s disappointing 3-1 defeat to Brighton behind them.

Ten Hag was without a number of first-team players for the game on Saturday, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka is now set for several weeks on the sidelines due to injury. He joined the likes of Sofyan Amrabat, Mason Mount and Raphael Varane in watching from the sidelines.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are reportedly keeping an eye on Jadon Sancho and could make a loan approach in January while it is claimed Borussia Dortmund are not interested in a return move for the winger.

Spanish club target David De Gea transfer – reports

Real Betis are reported to be eyeing-up a move for David De Gea.

De Gea remains a free agent after leaving Old Trafford this summer.

The goalkeeper played 545 games in 12 seasons for United.

Reports from Spanish publication Fichajes underline proposed interest from Betis in the now-former United stopper. De Gea, 32, was previously mooted as a possible stop-gap replacement for Thibaut Courtois at Real Madrid.

Kane and Rice were on United’s shortlist of targets at one time or another and both left their clubs this summer. Kane was sold to Bayern Munich, while Rice joined Arsenal.

Fenerbahce ‘considered’ Scott McTominay swoop

Fenerbahce made a last-gasp attempt to sign Scott McTominay this summer.

That’s according to reports from Takvim – via Sport Witness – on the midfielder.

McTominay, 26, started for United in their defeat vs Brighton.

However, speculation over his future at Old Trafford was at fever pitch throughout the transfer window and Turkish clubs had until Friday night to strike-up their business. Fenerbahce and any other potential suitors were, though, unable to launch a successful bid.

United have already picked out two prime targets for the January window.

That’s according to developing reports from Spanish publication Fichajes.

Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry and Jose Maria Gimenez are the two names.

The article suggests United are ready to pay around £52million to target Gnabry as the would-be replacement for Jadon Sancho after he was ousted from the squad. Centre-back Gimenez is, also, claimed to be drawing interest at Atletico Madrid.

‘Shambles’ – Alan Shearer defends Erik ten Hag

TV pundit Alan Shearer has staunchly defended Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag amid ongoing issues in the boardroom amid a proposed takeover at Old Trafford.

On the field, United have picked up only six points from a possible 15 this season culminating in their 3-1 defeat against Brighton on Saturday afternoon. Behind the scenes the much-maligned Glazer family are still to make their final decision on what to do next with the club.

Shearer told The Rest Is Football podcast: “I’m not saying it’s all their fault, because it shouldn’t effect what happens on the pitch, but at whatever level you’re at, what happens at the very top or an organisation always drip-feeds itself down on to the shop floor.”

Harry Kane issues ‘dangerous’ United prediction

England captain Harry Kane admits Manchester United will be a ‘dangerous’ opponent for Bayern Munich as they look to get back on track in a “big way” following their struggles so far this campaign.

United, who flirted with a would-be pursuit for Kane before he signed for Bayern this summer, have already fallen to three defeats in the Premier League this season.

Erik ten Hag and his misfiring team are now gearing up for their return to the Champions League against Bayern at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

Erik ten Hag ‘eyeing’ new midfielder

A report from Sport claims Erik ten Hag is tracking Royal Antwerp midfielder Arthur Vermeeren ahead of a possible future move.

The 18-year-old is due to face Barcelona on Tuesday in the Champions League.

The Belgium Under-21s international has already tallied two assists in nine games – the same amount he recorded last term in 40 matches.

United injury news and return dates

United’s injury crisis is getting even worse ahead of Wednesday night’s trip to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

United’s packed treatment room means the start of the Champions League has probably come at the worst possible time. Erik ten Hag confirmed last week that one player would return soon but it’s unclear who.

With this in mind, MEN Sport has taken a look at the latest United injury news.

OPINION: Hojlund is already giving United what they wanted

After just 87 minutes worth of football, it is already becoming clearer why Manchester United identified Rasmus Hojlund as their ideal candidate to strengthen their forward line.

Though he has failed to get off the mark in each of his first two outings for the club, it would have been very different had it not been for a VAR call.

The Danish international thought he had marked his full debut for United with a goal in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford, only for VAR to rule that Marcus Rashford had carried the ball out of play in the build-up.

Ferdinand makes Harry Kane prediction ahead of United vs Bayern

Rio Ferdinand believes Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane will have “the bit between his teeth” when he faces Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Erik ten Hag had targeted a summer move for Kane to help fix his side’s goalscoring problems. However, it soon became clear that Daniel Levy was reluctant to sell to a fellow Premier League club.

“He’s a phenomenal player, his record speaks for itself,” Ferdinand said of Kane.

Worst start to PL season in nine years

United’s return of six points from their first five games is their worst start to a Premier League season since the 2014/15 campaign.

That year, under Louis van Gaal, they tallied just five points across the same period with losses to Swansea and Leicester (the famous 5-3) plus draws with Sunderland and Burnley.

That season, United finished fourth in the table…

Hugill ‘set’ for January loan

United academy youngster Joe Hugill is reportedly set for another January exit.

The striker – who scored against Leeds in pre-season – spent the second half of last season at non-lague side Altrincham where he scored once in seven outings.

Now, journalist Alan Nixon says the 19-year-old is of interest to several Championship clubs and could make another loan switch in the new year.

Injury XI

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s setback hands Erik ten Hag yet another blow to his plans. United’s form on the pitch is waning, but that has not been helped by the club’s back luck with injuries.

In fact, you could have a whole XI out of those who are currently sidelined….

REPORT – Dortmund ‘stance’ on Sancho return

According to Sport Bild, a return to Dortmund for Sancho is not being considered by the Bundesliga club at this time.

It is thought Sancho is still well-liked at his old club but plans to sign him are not currently on the table.

Sancho’s future at United is unclear after a public spat with Ten Hag.

Who can replace Wan-Bissaka?

With another injury to contend with, United fans’ attention turns to who can fill in for Wan-Bissaka.

It seems Dalot is a shoo-in to start at right-back with Reguilon remaining at left-back.

Options become increasingly stretched if either man gains an injury though with all replacements unavailable.

Wan-Bissaka picks up injury

Wan-Bissaka is set for time on the sidelines after picking up an injury in the latter stages vs Brighton.

The Englishman started on the bench this weekend after suffering with illness prior to kick-off.

OPINION – Kane will ask questions of United’s problem area

Across the entirety of the campaign so far, question marks have been raised by United’s midfield.

Casemiro has not started as brightly as last season and the Reds ultimately seem more vulnerable in the middle of the park.

Unfortunately, this position will be tested to its fullest on Wednesday night thanks to Bayern’s new striker.

Pellistri excited for Champions League test

United’s winger spoke to MUTV about the beginning of the Reds’ Champions League journey on Wednesday night.

He said:

It’s one of the best tournaments in the world. United deserves to be there and, as we are United, we have to give everything. The Barcelona games [in last season’s Europa League play-off] were amazing and we are looking forward to those types of games in the Champions League. We are ready to play against everyone.

REPORT – Bayern still interested in United midfielder

According to the Daily Mirror, Bayern Munich remain interested in signing McTominay.

It is unclear whether he will start in midweek but Tuchel will be hopeful his side can deal with United’s midfielder.

REPORT – United missed out on another Inter signing

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, United had ‘strong interest’ in Inter’s Nicolo Barella during the summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old central midfielder is a regular for the Italian giants and has featured in all of their Serie A matches so far this season.

Midfield was an area of concern in the summer with the Reds signing Amrabat and Mount to strengthen the position.

Eriksen backs Hojlund to score

Christian Eriksen has backed Rasmus Hojlund to help solve the wastefulness in front of goal.

“It was unlucky for Rasmus, his debut here, it was disallowed, but I’m sure he’ll turn it around and score a lot more goals. We tried to come back and with how they play, there was a lot of running from our side,” he told MUTV after Brighton.

“In the end, I still think we had enough chances to come back and we just didn’t take them. It’s been like that this season so far, I think if we changed that, the games would be a lot easier to play.”

Getafe boss apologises over incorrect remark

Getafe’s manager has apologised for falsely claiming Jude Bellingham had recommended a move to Spain to Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood signed for Getafe on a season-long loan last month following a six-and-a-half-month investigation at Old Trafford, which decided that ‘it would be most appropriate for him’ to continue his career away from the club.

The La Liga club have received criticism for the signing of Greenwood but their fans have largely reacted positively to his arrival.

United players set to return from injury

Erik ten Hag expects more United players to return from injury against Burnley next Saturday.

United have lost three of their first five games for the first time in the Premier League era after Brighton recorded a fourth successive league win against them at Old Trafford.

Raphael Varane, Mason Mount, Sofyan Amrabat, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad were among the absentees for United in the 3-1 defeat but Ten Hag is hopeful he will have a fuller squad at Turf Moor.

How to order your Champions League special

United are back in with Europe’s big boys this season and kick off their group-stage campaign with one of the toughest ties possible: away to German giants Bayern Munich.

Bayern have won the biggest competition in club football six times and are currently on a run of 11 successive Bundesliga titles. Whatever you might think about the intensity of the competition in Germany, that is some achievement.

The addition of England captain Harry Kane only adds to their quality and they are the clear second-favourites to hoist the Champions League trophy on June 1 next year.

Ahead of United’s campaign getting underway, the MEN has produced a 40-page special previewing United’s latest tilt at European glory.

Barcelona ‘considering Sancho’

Barcelona are considering a move for Jadon Sancho, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.

Sancho has been told to train separately from the first-team after his social media outburst and he’s understood to be open to leaving in January if his situation doesn’t change.

It’s claimed La Liga champions Barcelona could offer him an escape route in the January window and that a loan until the end of the campaign has been discussed.

Ten Hag tactical gamble failed vs Brighton

“Can we play you every week?” was the request from the jubilant away end as Brighton inflicted another miserable day on Manchester United. Seats were being vacated around the rest of Old Trafford, supporters voting with their feet with their side 3-0 down at home.

Those who left early missed Hannibal Mejbri’s excellent consolation goal, but it was of little comfort. This was another alarming day for a team that has lost its mojo from last season and already look in danger of squandering their place in the top four.

This week they return to the Champions League in Munich, but Erik ten Hag must already be concerned about whether his side has what it takes to make their stay in that competition extend beyond one season. It’s too early to jump to definitive conclusions, but United are 12th, nine points behind Manchester City already and seven adrift of Liverpool and Tottenham, possibly Arsenal if they beat Everton on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag expects more United players to return from injury against Burnley next Saturday.

Raphael Varane, Mason Mount, Sofyan Amrabat, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad were among the absentees for United in the 3-1 defeat to Brighton but Ten Hag is hopeful he will have a fuller squad at Turf Moor.

Before then, United commence their Champions League campaign with the group stage opener away to Bayern Munich. Ten Hag indicated one unnamed player would be in contention to make the travelling squad.

“Maybe, maybe one player. But I think Munich is a little bit too short. I go to Burnley and the week after, players will return.

“Bayern Munich is one of the favorites to win the Champions League, so we have to be good there and I already explained we need character, belief, resilience, determination, absolutely.”

Athletic Bilbao are confident of fending off interest from United and other sides in Nico Williams, according to Football Transfers.

Williams’ current contract with the Spanish side is set to expire next summer, with United among several European sides monitoring the situation ahead of a potential free transfer.

But Bilbao hope to get a new contract signed before January, the point at which he can enter pre-contract talks with other clubs.
