The Costa del Sol is the Costa of golf. The Finca Cortesín field, in Casares (Málaga), hosts the Solheim Cup between this Friday and Sunday, the exciting duel between the 12 best golfers in Europe and the 12 in the United States, a unique tournament that for the first time in history is held in Spain. More than 100,000 tickets sold, 500 accredited journalists and a global audience (Movistar Golf, TVE and Telecinco will cover it) speak of the importance of this Golf World Cup, possibly the most relevant women’s sports event that the country has ever hosted.
On the green, a constellation of stars. Norwegian Suzann Pettersen captains a European team with only one Spanish in their ranks, Carlota Ciganda, five Swedish players and 10 of their 12 representatives among the top 50 in the world rankings. “We have never had such a strong group,” says Pettersen, a reference who won two majors and participated in nine Solheims as a player (she retired from golf precisely after the putt winner of 2019) and two as vice-captain. In the United States, another symbol, Stacy Lewis (led the world ranking), leads the usual collection of figures, the 12 in the top 50, with number one, Lilia Vu, and number two, Nelly Korda, both 25 years, in front.
Europe is chasing its third consecutive title at home in a competition that was born in 1990. The balance is 10-7 for the USA, but the Europeans, usually stronger as a team, have four victories in the last six editions.
“It is the best year in Europe at Solheim in terms of classification. In the US there has been a generational change, it is a younger team, with five rookies. One of them has won two majors, Lilia Wu, and another the US Open, Allisen Corpuz. They are a great team. It is very close, although playing in Europe may help us,” says Carlota Ciganda. An unprecedented Solheim promises great emotions.
