While ‘taking good photos’ isn’t the primary reason to take a trip, it’s always nice to get home with some epic snaps to help you remember your trip.
Aussie traveller Monique would definitely agree – she left Istanbul with some of the best photos of her life.
And it was all because a creepy man was following her around, refusing to leave her alone.
Before attending the wedding of her friend in Istanbul, Sydney-based Monique was visiting Turkey on her own, which she called an “intense experience”.
In a post on her Instagram page, the traveller shared some stunning photos of her swinging in a flowing red dress, the city skyline behind her.
“On this particular day, I was walking around exploring the city by myself and had a man who kept following me and wouldn’t leave me alone – even when I kept telling him I was ‘meeting up with a friend’ (which I wasn’t),” she wrote.
In the process of trying to lose the man who was following her, she started heading into stores, hoping he’d keep walking.
“I walked into a store that offered a full production photoshoot on their rooftop for a reasonable price and they happened to have an available spot for me if I wanted to head up and take some photos,” Monique shared.
“So what’s a safer way of losing the random man who’s following you than signing up for a photo shoot on a Turkish rooftop for a few hours? Safe to say I lost the street stalker and got some great photos to remember my trip!”
The shoot cost her €120, about $200, and included dress hire, 300 raw digital images, 10 edited images and two reels.
“They had an entire wardrobe of amazing dresses to choose from!” she said.
The entire experience was pretty special, she told 9Honey.
“They had a cameraman, a pose stylist who was behind the camera encouraging poses, and a man whose job was to make sure the dress was flowing in the wind as well as encouraging the birds,” she said.
“I felt like I was on the set of a front cover magazine shoot, and they all made me feel so comfortable and beautiful in front of the camera. Which was an amazing feeling after a recent heartbreak from a six-year relationship that ended a few weeks prior.”
Though the situation could have turned out very differently, Monique definitely made lemonade from lemons. And thankfully, it hasn’t put her off solo travel.

“If I were to go to Turkey again, which I would absolutely love to, I would look into booking with an authentic small group tour company, just for that added peace of mind and safety.”
“I should also add that I met some amazing people in Istanbul who were extremely hospitable and kind,” Monique said. “They were deeply saddened and embarrassed to hear about my negative Istanbul experiences.”
