In a shocking turn of events, the Detroit Pistons vs New York Knicks matchup on Monday has become a major topic in the NBA. This has to with how things ended and a controversial no-call by the officials.
Pistons forward Ausar Thompson picked up a clutch steal that likely would have iced the game for Detroit. However, Donte DiVincenzo bumped him while making his way up the court, causing the ball to poke free. Jalen Brunson ended up recovering it and hitting Josh Hart for the eventual game winner.
Following the game, the officials admitted that a foul should have been called on the play. However, it was too late by then. The Knicks had already secured a 113-111 victory.
As expected, the Pistons were not pleased during their postgame press conferences. Monty Williams went on a fiery rant, citing the play as one of the worst calls of the season.
Later on, Cade Cunningham was asked his thoughts on the events that unfolded. The young guard was left speechless, but visibly frustrated with the final play. In the end, all he could focus on was the Pistons’ next game.
“Didn’t go our way,” Cunningham told reporters postgame. “I mean there’s nothing to say man. There’s no words for it, it is what it is. Just how’s its been. Got Chicago tomorrow.”
Cunningham’s frustrations might also stem from the outing he had. The former No. 1 pick turned in another impressive showing, but it wasn’t enough to get his team over the hump. Cunningham logged 36 minutes against the Knicks and finished with 32 points, five rebounds, eight assists, and two blocks. He also had an efficient night shooting the ball, going 10-for-19 from the field and 5-for-7 from beyond the arc.
Cunningham will now look to keep his impressive string of performances going on Tuesday night against the Chicago Bulls.
